Everything that hangs, hangs for a reason: garments drying off on a clothes line or a dissected body at display during an anatomy lesson are part of a process. The laundry needs to dry off so it can be returned to the wardrobe and worn; a carcass being exhibited conveys knowledge to future professionals. A thing that is hanging anticipates a future action and also implies antecedents. We are looking precisely for this point in the process: transience.
